Web design in Cambourne

Cambourne is a planned town on the A428, about nine miles west of Cambridge, built from 1998 on former farmland. It is young, still growing and home to the offices of South Cambridgeshire District Council.

A town that did not exist thirty years ago

Cambourne was planned in the late 1980s and early 1990s as a new settlement on around 400 hectares of agricultural land west of Cambridge. Construction began in June 1998, and the town has grown in phases ever since, starting from the villages of Lower, Great and Upper Cambourne and later extending west. It sits on the A428 between Cambridge to the east and St Neots and Bedford to the west.

That history shapes the local economy in a way that matters for websites. Almost every business in Cambourne is relatively new. There are few long-established family firms with decades of word-of-mouth reputation, and a large share of residents moved in within the past twenty years. People here find local services by searching, asking in community groups online and reading reviews, rather than by knowing who has always done the job.

Cambourne Business Park and the council

Cambourne Business Park lies to the north-east of Great Cambourne. South Cambridgeshire District Council moved its headquarters there from Cambridge in 2004, and Cambourne is now the administrative centre of the district. Other employers on the park include offices of regional and national companies that wanted modern space with parking on the Cambridge side of the A1.

Parts of the business park have since been earmarked for housing, a reminder that Cambourne is still changing. Businesses here should expect neighbours, roads and catchments to keep shifting, and build websites that can be updated easily as they do.

Who needs a website in Cambourne

The mix of businesses reflects a town full of families and commuters:

  • Childcare and education: nurseries, childminders, tutors, after-school clubs and activity providers.
  • Health and wellbeing: physiotherapists, personal trainers, studios and clinics.
  • Home services: trades, cleaners, gardeners and handyman services working across new-build estates.
  • Professional services: accountants, mortgage advisers and consultants, many working from home offices.
  • Business park firms: companies with regional or national customers who rarely search with the word "Cambourne".

Because the town is new, many residents do not yet have a trusted name for every service. Searches tend to be practical and specific: "nursery Cambourne", "Ofsted outstanding nursery near Cambourne", "plumber Upper Cambourne", "Pilates Cambourne". The results that win usually have three things in common: a complete Google Business Profile, a website that clearly states the service and area, and genuine reviews.

New-build buyers also search for things linked to their homes, such as snagging help, garden landscaping, flooring, blinds and extensions. A tradesperson who explains the common issues with newer houses in the area, using examples from real jobs, will usually beat a competitor with a generic page.

Building for a growing town

West Cambourne and further housing nearby mean more customers arriving every year. For a local business that is an opportunity, but only if the website is ready for it. We build Cambourne sites so that adding a new service, a new staff member or a second location takes minutes in the editor rather than a developer's time. We also make sure the site works properly on a phone, because that is where nearly all local searches start.

Cambourne tip: community Facebook groups drive a lot of recommendations here. Make sure that when someone mentions your business, the link they share goes to a fast, clear page with a simple way to get in touch.

Working with us from Cambourne

Cambourne is a short drive from Cambridge along the A428, so we are glad to meet at your premises or nearby. Most of the project then runs remotely. We plan the site, write or edit the copy with you, build it, set up local search and leave you with a site you can run yourself.

Working with us from Cambourne

Most of our work with businesses outside the city runs over video calls and email, with meetings in person when they are useful. Your website is planned around your customers in Cambourne and the surrounding area, not around a template used for every town.
