Web design in Sawston

Sawston is a large village south of Cambridge, with the Babraham Research Campus and Granta Park nearby. Its businesses serve a growing residential population and some of the busiest life science sites in the region.

A village with a big footprint

Sawston is one of the larger villages in South Cambridgeshire, with its own high street, shops, pubs, light industry and a population that has grown with new housing. It also has a place in the history of English education: Sawston Village College, opened in 1930 by the Prince of Wales, was the first of the village colleges devised by Henry Morris, then Cambridgeshire's chief education officer. His idea was a school that served as the centre of its community for all ages, and similar colleges followed at Bottisham, Linton and Bassingbourn.

Research campuses on the doorstep

Two of the region's major life science sites are close to Sawston. The Babraham Research Campus is built around the Babraham Institute, which receives strategic funding from BBSRC, and supports early-stage and growing bioscience companies with labs and offices. Granta Park, near Great Abington, is home to more than thirty life science companies and research organisations, including large pharmaceutical and genomics firms as well as fast-growing biotechs.

Further south, the Wellcome Genome Campus at Hinxton adds to the cluster. Together these sites employ large numbers of scientists, technicians and support staff, and they rely on a long chain of suppliers and services.

Who does business around Sawston

  • Campus companies: biotech, drug discovery, genomics and tools companies, from start-ups to established firms.
  • Campus suppliers: lab equipment servicing, consumables, facilities management, specialist cleaning, cold-chain logistics, catering and recruitment.
  • Village businesses: shops, cafés, hairdressers, garages, pubs and takeaways serving residents and campus staff.
  • Trades and home services: builders and installers working on homes across Sawston, the Shelfords, Linton, Pampisford and the Abingtons.

The high street and village trade

Sawston's own shops and services have a mixed customer base: long-standing residents, families in newer housing, and campus staff passing through on their way to work or stopping for lunch. That gives village businesses two windows of demand, early morning and lunchtime from commuters and campus workers, and evenings and weekends from residents. A website and Google listing that make hours, ordering and parking obvious help capture both. Small details, such as whether you take pre-orders for collection or offer lunch deliveries to nearby sites, are worth stating clearly because they are exactly what people search for.

Sawston businesses face two very different kinds of search. Residents use plain local searches, such as "takeaway Sawston" or "garage Sawston", and decide quickly based on the map listing, reviews and a mobile-friendly website. Campus buyers rarely search with a place name at all. They search for a capability, compare a shortlist and then check whether the supplier is credible and nearby.

Websites for campus companies

Life science companies at Babraham and Granta Park need sites that explain their science to investors, partners and recruits at the same time. We structure those explanations in layers, from a one-line summary to technical detail, and build templates for news, publications and vacancies so the company can keep the site current. Hiring is competitive across the southern campuses, so a careers section that answers practical questions about location, transport and culture is worth the effort.

Websites for suppliers

If you service equipment or provide support to labs in the area, your website is often how a new lab manager confirms you are the right choice after a colleague's recommendation. It should state what you cover, how quickly you respond, what standards you work to and how to start an account. Being local is a real advantage here; say so plainly.

Sawston tip: if you serve both residents and campus staff, consider separate routes from the homepage, such as "For local customers" and "For labs and businesses", rather than mixing both on one page.
